BLACKPOOL AVIATION ACADEMY

The growth of Blackpool International Airport as a gateway to Europe is a key aspect of the resort’s regeneration.

And, as the airport grows, it’s equally important that people within Blackpool can capitalise on the job opportunities that might be created. To do that successfully, they must be able to benefit from new skills and training.

The intention is to create a new “one-stop shop” Aviation Academy where training for all jobs within the sector will be available, with opportunities for full-time, part-time, school links and work-based provision.

The lead partner in this project is Blackpool & The Fylde College’s Automotive Department, which is part of the School of Engineering and Computing. The department has already procured a real aircraft for the engineering part of the programme.

The College’s School of Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality will have responsibility for the non-engineering element of the academy such as passenger and baggage handling, air cabin crew training and other customer service-related work.

Over 240 students are projected to go through the academy over the next three years.
