The Sandcastle Waterpark’s sustainability provisions were initially identified in 2007 through SWOT analysis, the biggest threat to the business was identified as the dependency on energy and water and its rising cost.

They immediately identified the need to install metering and sub metering data systems as a means of measuring the impact of all initiatives and were inspired by the savings to the bottom line of the business.
Now sustainability has become an integral part of their management systems, policies and business plan, they actively promote their achievements internally and externally as an essential ingredient of their training and development programme and have provided case studies throughout the North West, Nationally and Internationally.
They believe that it has become a great deal easier to procure quality services locally and they feel this sets the conditions to promote skill levels and employment. The reductions in expenditure are phenomenal and have created opportunities for business development and finance opportunities for further environmental initiatives. Future initiatives include Voltage optimisation, CHP, PV solar panels and water discharging technologies.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of their work is supporting events that create a fantastic experience for some of their marginalised communities. These events have energised the staff and the guests, built up excellent community relations and generally improved the feel good factor.
A few examples of their environmental achievements are as follows;
• Optimised the compressors used for the wave pool, saving 717 kWh pa.
• Commissioned ultra sound testing to their air systems to identify leaks, this has saved them 4545 kWh pa.
• Installed a liquid pool blanket system and improved their monitoring and use of their Building Management System. This saves 857462 kWh pa.
• Changed the lamps on a lighting rig from par 64 floods to efficient LED’s saving 13005 kWh pa.
• Installed urinal cistern controls saving 300 cubic metres pa and water flow regulators saving 272 cubic meters pa.
• Replaced 28 shower heads with aerated versions reducing usage by 60%.
• Replaced x50 inefficient taps with push taps reducing usage by 50 %.
• They are members of Groundworks Resource Efficiency Club which has allowed them to network with some of the most forward thinking businesses in the region and has provided educational workshops and seminars which have facilitated practical solutions such as thermal imaging, rainwater harvesting feasibility and ultrasound testing amongst others.
