Sir Geoff kick-starts apprentice campaign
World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst visited Blackpool to kick start an ambitious campaign to generate 100 local apprenticeships in 100 days.
Sir Geoff, hat-trick hero of England's 1966 World Cup victory, was guest speaker at the Future Generations event organised by local training providers, Beneast.
It was staged to coincide with the start of National Apprenticeship Week and was supported by BlackpoolUnlimited.com and The Gazette newspaper.
Dozens of local employers were invited to the conference to hear Sir Geoff tell them: "Apprenticeships are very much the backbone of businesses, large and small.
"It's all about giving young people the opportunity to get on the career ladder. Apprenticeships are vital for a business to build on and survive, and to have your own is the only way to develop and nurture your company."
Employers were invited to sign up to the apprenticeship scheme, with a view to generating 100 over the next 100 days.
Alison Hall, Executive Director of Beneast Training, said: "Apprenticeships bring benefits to individuals, employers and the local economy.
"They can boost productivity and staff retention, and provide an optimal way of training and developing your workforce."
Adam Anderson, Training Manager for Blackpool-based AI Claims, said his company had trained 177 young people over the past 10 years and he confirmed that his company would be joining the Future Generations programme.
- Any 16-18 year-old can apply to become an apprentice through Beneast Training.
All youngsters will be given a robust schedule to find the scheme that suits them the best.
They will be paid a minimum of £95 by the company which employs them and all the training will be provided through the skills training team at Beneast.
