£10m boost for business efficiency
ENWORKS, the Northwest environmental business support service, has received approval for a £9.9 million investment to extend its existing service and continue to offer specialist support to the region’s SMEs until 2013.
Funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) with £6.4 million, the programme has also received £3.5 million from the European Regional Development Fund Programme (ERDF).
Established in 2001 by the NWDA, ENWORKS enables businesses to achieve resource efficiency savings by managing and reducing their use of energy, water and raw materials. ENWORKS supports businesses to review in full their environmental impacts - from the products manufactured, to the processes used and the waste generated.
In addition, ENWORKS will reduce the region’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and reduce commercial and industrial waste to landfill; and will increase the knowledge of resource efficiency amongst employees.
With the additional support and investment, ENWORKS will:
• Support a further 1,250 Northwest companies*
• Generate cost savings of £60 million for Northwest companies
• Deliver 255,000 tonnes of CO2 savings
• Deliver water savings of 2,050,000 tonnes
• Create an additional 240 jobs in the region and safeguard a further 500
• Increase sales in the region by £25 million and safeguard sales by £60 million.
The services offered by ENWORKS will be available to a number of sectors including food, chemicals, aerospace, automotive and textiles, as well as businesses that have been identified as having a high environmental impact
Since 2001 ENWORKS has helped over 3,600 businesses with £75 million cost savings identified.
Peter Watson, Managing Director of Business Link Northwest said:
“I am absolutely delighted that more North West businesses will be supported in becoming greener and more efficient thanks to the extension of ENWORKS. The benefits to the economy and the environment will be wide-ranging and cannot be underestimated.”
