The Child Death Overview Panel for Blackpool is concerned about the number of deaths amongst children in Blackpool where sleeping arrangements were noted to be a factor in the death.

As a result the Panel wishes to raise awareness of safe sleeping messages throughout the town, and to ask all organisations within Blackpool to take action where possible to reduce the risk of babies dying unexpectedly.
Sadly, accidents can happen. For example, sharing a bed with a baby can increase the risk of the baby dying unexpectedly if the adult is very tired, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication. Babies can suffocate as a result of being rolled on, or becoming caught between the wall and bed, or may be injured as a result of rolling onto the floor. Deaths have also been linked to improvised sleeping arrangements such as propped up pushchairs.
However, we do know that there are steps that can be taken, and clear messages can help parents to reduce the risk of their baby dying.
The safest place for a baby to sleep is in a cot.
I would ask that you join with us to promote safe sleeping. If you offer accommodation to families with young children then please ensure that a cot with Kite mark or CE mark is available to them.

Together we can help ensure that Blackpool is a safer place for children.
