£70k to get Blackpool workers on their bikes

Blackpool Council has £70,000 to give to workplaces that want to be more cycle-friendly.

The workplace grant scheme is designed to give financial assistance to places that want to encourage their staff or pupils to cycle, but may not have the right facilities in place.

More than £22k has already been given to local businesses and schools including:

  • The De Vere Heron's Reach Hotel - £1500 towards the cost of a bike shelter and secure parking in the hotel car park
  • Blackpool Victoria Hospital - £8,000 towards a significant improvement in cycle parking and storage
  • Blackpool Sixth Form College - £5,000 towards the cost of a large sheltered area at the front of the college and 40 cycle parking places
  • Blackpool & The Fylde College - £6,500 towards the cost of cycle shelters and secure facilities at the town centre and Bispham campus sites

The only requirement of the grant is that the business or workplace must match the amount themselves. They can receive up to £8,000 towards the cost of cycle parking, storage, lockers or showers.

Cllr Tony Williams, Blackpool Council's Cabinet Member for Culture and Communities, said: "As part of our cycling town status, we are trying to assist and encourage anyone who wants to cycle for leisure or to commute.

"This scheme is a way of helping local businesses and education facilities who are committed to supporting staff and students who choose to cycle to the workplace or classroom."

Anyone interested in the workplace grant scheme should contact the Cycle Blackpool programme at cycling@blackpool.gov.uk or call 01253 476260
